Ohio Board OKs Medicaid Proposal As Single Issue
Supporters of a proposal to expand Medicaid can now begin collecting signatures in a campaign that could put the issue before Ohio voters next year.
The Ohio Ballot Board cleared the proposal on Thursday as a single issue. The decision is the latest step for backers of extending the federal-state health program for the poor and disabled.
The group Healthy Ohioans Work needs roughly 116,000 signatures in their campaign. The General Assembly would then have four months to act on the proposed law.
If legislators pass, amend or take no action, then a supplemental petition may be circulated to get the issue before Ohio voters in November 2014.
Supporters say they would rather have the GOP-controlled Legislature pass Medicaid expansion than to put the issue before voters.
