Police say they are trying to determine why a 72-year-old Columbus man fatally stabbed his wife and then tried to cut his own throat.

Columbus police say Leif Mortensen called 911 Wednesday and reported that his 74-year-old wife Margaret was dead in the kitchen of their home on Kingpin Dr. on the Northeast side.

Police say Mortensen met officers outside the house with wounds to his neck. He was taken to a hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

Mortensen faces a single charge of murder.

Stunned neighbors told reporters that the Mortensens seemed like nice, friendly people.

Police say it was the 10th homicide in Columbus this year.
