Columbus Man Dies Saving Boy From Icy Pond
Police say a man drowned while saving a five-year-old boy who fell through the ice on a southeast Columbus pond.
Police say 30-year-old James Jenkins jumped into the pond yesterday at the Eastland on the Lake apartment complex near Eastland Mall and was able to reach the child, but both submerged before reaching the shore.
Jenkins was pronounced dead late Thursday at Grant Medical Center. The child was listed in life-threatening condition.
Temperatures in Columbus rose to the mid-40s Thursday after several days with overnight temperatures well below freezing.
Police say four other people have drowned in the same pond since 1998.
