Ohio State University is appealing a finding by federal health authorities who allege serious deficiencies at the university’s medical center clinical lab.

At issue are samples the government says were improperly sent from the university’s clinical lab to another Ohio State lab in violation of university and federal policies that prohibit samples from being analyzed elsewhere.

Ohio State has said the improper transmission of medical lab samples earlier this year was an accident that did not affect patients’ health and won’t happen again.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services says it’s proceeding with sanctions that include loss of the lab’s certification.

The university has 90 days to appeal and any sanctions are delayed during that process.
