The quality of police training academies in Ohio and the need for stronger statewide training standards are among the issues an attorney general’s committee is considering as it explores possible changes to the way Ohio trains police officers.
Young Pedestrian Killed In Springfield Chase
Police say an SUV driver fleeing officers struck and killed a 12-year-old girl in western Ohio.
Springfield police Chief Steve Moody says officers clocked the driver going 62 mph in a 35 mph zone and tried to follow the SUV before it crashed Sunday evening, roughly 40 miles west of Columbus. Moody says the driver hit a pole, veered into some woods and apparently struck the young pedestrian somewhere along the way.
Moody says the girl was trapped beneath the vehicle for nearly three hours and died at the scene.
A 13-year-old girl walking with the victim jumped out of the vehicle’s path and wasn’t hurt.
Police arrested the 30-year-old driver. He was expected to be charged with aggravated vehicular homicide.
