Ohio now has new rules on how much water farms, factories and other businesses can draw from Lake Erie.

Gov. John Kasich signed off on the new law Monday despite objections from some environmental groups.

The law spells out Ohio’s water use rules in the Great Lakes Compact between eight states and two Canadian provinces that border the lakes.

Kasich vetoed an earlier attempt to establish rules last year, but he says this new version provides stronger protection for Lake Erie.

Environmentalists say the rules don’t go far enough to protect the lake and its tributaries. They also say it limits who can have a say over the water use permits.

Some opponents have said they might file a lawsuit challenging the new rules.
