Obama To Award Medal Of Freedom To John Glenn
President Barack Obama is presenting the nation’s highest civilian honor to a diverse cross-section of political and cultural icons, including astronaut John Glenn of Ohio.
The Medal of Freedom recipients include former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, longtime Tennessee women’s basketball coach Pat Summit and rock legend Bob Dylan. They were being honored with a White House ceremony Tuesday.
The Medal of Freedom is presented to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to U.S. interests, world peace or other significant endeavors.
Glenn was the first American to orbit the earth. Albright was the first woman to hold the top U.S. diplomatic job. Summitt led the University of Tennessee women’s basketball team to more NCAA Final Four appearances than any other team. And Dylan’s vast catalog of songs includes such rock classics as “Like a Rolling Stone.”
