After 16 years, the second longest serving justice on the Ohio Supreme Court says she’s stepping down.

Justice Evelyn Lundberg Stratton announced she’s leaving the bench to focus on causes she feels are important to the court system overall, such as mental health issues and juvenile justice concerns.

“By no longer being a justice, once I step down at the end of this year, I can advocate for issues and maybe policy changes that even are broader than the administration of justice. So that would be a freedom that I would be able to engage in,” Stratton says.

Stratton says she’s making her announcement to give her replacement plenty of time to campaign.

“I got appointed in March and had to be elected that November. That’s crazy, to run a statewide race with no preparation. I didn’t want to do that to anybody.”

Stratton, who is one of six Republicans on the seven-member court, was appointed to the high court in 1996.
