Columbus Police shot and killed a man on the East side Friday morning after he reportedly tried to use his vehicle to run down officers.

Sgt. Rich Weiner says the shooting happened around 4 a.m. in a lot at E. 14th Ave. and N. Cassidy Ave.

“He took off at a high rate of speed and struck one of the officers, which caused the officer to land on top of the vehicle. At that time both officers fired multiple shots,” Weiner said.

Police have not publicly identified the man. They say he was under surveillance for suspicion of stealing vehicle parts from a nearby business.
