Ohio To Get More Disposal Wells For Drilling Waste
Ohio regulators have given a Texas company a permit to create and operate two wells in Mansfield to dispose of salty water that’s a byproduct of the gas drilling procedure known as fracking.
The Columbus Dispatch reports the 5,000-foot wells would inject up to 150,000 barrels of brine brought in by trains and by trucks. The Department of Natural Resources said the site halfway between Cleveland and Columbus would be the first in Ohio to accept brine sent by rail.
The state has 192 disposal wells that have accepted 8.8 million barrels of brine since January.
About half of it comes from out of state. Much of that is trucked in from neighboring Pennsylvania, where thousands of wells have been drilled recently into the Marcellus Shale.
