Ohio Studies Centralizing Local Tax Collections
Ohio cities and towns are resisting an idea being studied by the Kasich administration, to have the state collect local taxes.
Tax Commissioner Joseph Testa tells The Columbus Dispatch that the state’s current web of municipal taxes is too complex and bad for business.
The Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants last year recommended that the state look into centralizing local tax collections, possibly by piggybacking them on state tax returns.
Testa says his department is “in the investigating stage.”
The Ohio Municipal League opposes the concept of centralizedÂ local taxation. League legislative representative Kent Scarrett says communities are concerned that they’d wind up losing revenue.
