Two years ago, a WOSU investigation found that in 2011 and 2012 Columbus police shot more people per capita than police in New York City. But in the last year the number of police shootings by Columbus officers has dropped.
Ohio Retailers Optimistic About Commerce Report
Ohio retailers hope a new report from the Commerce Department is a harbinger of things to come.
The report shows a half-percent bump in nationwide retail sales last month. That’s the best showing in five months and above analyst expectations. Gordon Gough with the Ohio Council of Retail Merchants says that has businesses feeling optimistic.
“There was kind of a lag because of high employment, even the disaster in Japan, which happened in March. It looks like consumers are beginning to spend again,†Gough says.
The new Commerce report also revises sales figures from the last two months, suggesting the economy was not as weak as previously thought.
