Lazarus Skybridge Demolition Begins
Listen to the Story
Demolition is underway on the pedestrian walkway that connects the City Centre mall to the old Lazarus building. Governor Ted Strickland and Mayor Michael Coleman were among the officials on hand today for the unveiling of the demolition over High Street – just one block from the state capitol building.
Gov. Strickland joked to Mayor Coleman that it was the bridge to nowhere – the sky bridge between City Centre Mall and the Lazarus building. Guy Worley is head of the Columbus Downtown Development Corporation.
“It’s the end of an impediment to progress. Today we begin the journey to demolish this sky bridge and finish the Lazarus Building,” Worley said.
Mayor Coleman said the once bustling retail district was now 152,000 square feet of vacant space. But he says that will change when the bridge across High Street comes down.
“It is a barrier to economic development, and retail development along High Street, it is a disincentive, it is dark, it is scary it is uninviting for retail in this community,” Coleman said.
The legislature provided $2.5 million of the $3 million project. The demolition should be completed in December.
