Ohio State names interim president

The Ohio State University Board of Trustees named Joseph Alutto to serve as interim president. Karen Holbrook’s term will end next Saturday. Alutto will assume responsibilites as university officials continue their search for a new president. Ohio State trustees met today to marking the second time they went into executive session in two weeks to discuss their search for a university president. Search committee chair, Alex Shumate gave few details concerning the final candidates.
“As I have said consistently throughout the search it’s very important to make sure we protect both the confidentiality as well as the privacy of the individuals going forward,” he said.
Popular former OSU president Gordon Gee, who served from 1990 to 1998, often comes up in conversations concerning the presidential search. Gee has been serving as chancellor of Vanderbilt University since 2000.
His spokesman today denied Gee was a candidate saying Vanderbilt’s chancellor anticipated speculation about his candidacy. In a statement Gee said he wishes Ohio State well in their search for a new president but plans to remain at Vanderbilt for a long time.
