Veteran journalist Carl Hoffman believes he’s solved one of the great mysteries of the 20th century. In 1961 at the age of 23, Michael Rockefeller – son of New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller and a member of one of the richest and most powerful families in America ¬– travelled to remote New Guinea in search of primitive art for his father’s new museum.
Delaware Co. Republicans Appoint New Sheriff
An Ohio law enforcement association says Delaware County’s new sheriff is the first African American to hold that position in the state. Walter “Magnum” Davis was sworn in Thursday night following his selection by the county’s Republican Central Committee.
Walter “Magnum” Davis, a 46-year-old sergeant with the Ohio Highway Patrol, was sworn in by Delaware County Common Pleas Judge Everett Kruger. The new sheriff spent part of his first day on the job Friday swearing in his deputies.
Davis, who spent 28 years with the highway patrol, replaces Al Myers who resigned about two months ago after pleading guilty to two first class misdemeanors. Davis says he wants to restore the integrity of the sheriff’s department.
“What I feel the sheriff’s department here in Delaware Co. needs is someone who doesn’t have any baggage or an ax to grind or favors to repay,” Davis says. “Fortunate or unfortunate, I don’t know anyone here so when I come in, as far as I’m concerned, everyone here starts off with a clean slate. No bad, no good, we start right here from ground zero.”
Under Ohio law, the county’s Republican Central Committee selects the new sheriff because Myers, the sheriff who resigned, is a Republican. Central Committee member Jerry Heston says Davis received a majority of votes cast among a field of five candidates. Heston says Davis is well qualified for the job.
“He has not been a trooper on the road, handing you and me a ticket for a good number of years. He served [in] the office of recruitment for minority relations; he’s been involved in the office of investigative services of the criminal intelligence unit. He’s just, just a nice guy,” Heston says.
Davis will fill the remainder of Al Myers’ term which expires at the end of next year. Davis says he’s gratified by the local Republican Party’s support.
Ask about claims that a laptop computer used by former Sheriff Myers had child pornography on it, Sheriff Davis declined to comment in detail. Myers has said it was evidence from an investigation. Davis says the matter has been turned over to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
