Ohio House Overrides Taft Veto on Gun Bill
The Ohio House has voted to override Governor Taft’s veto of a bill that restricts the ability of cities to pass their own gun laws.
The bill, which Taft vetoed earlier today, also lifts a requirement that drivers keep their guns in open view during traffic stops. Taft says the bill reaches beyond its intended purpose of cleaning up Ohio’s concealed weapons law because it pre-empts about 80 local gun laws, including assault-weapons bans in place in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dayton and Toledo.
The 71-to-21 vote was well-above the three-fifths majority of representatives needed for an override.
This is the first time in the Taft’s eight years in office that a chamber of the G-O-P controlled legislature voted to override him.
