95 percent of ancient Ohio was forested. But centuries ago there were also small regions of prairie. Tall grasses and wildflowers were part of the prairie ecology and so were bison. Researchers near Columbus are trying to reestablish a prairie / bison ecosystem.
Petro selects running mate with eye to November race
Attorney General Jim Petro is praising the experience of his newly chosen running mate in his campaign for governor.
Republican State Senator Joy Padgett of Coshocton was introduced Monday as Petro’s choice. Padgett says she’s long admired Petro and is honored to be part of the campaign against Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell for the GOP nomination.
Petro’s first lieutenant governor selection was Hamilton County Commissioner Phil Heimlich, but he decided to run for re-election.
Padgett’s stature in eastern Ohio could help Petro in a faceoff with Congressman Ted Strickland, the favorite for the Democratic nomination. (Copyright 2006 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
