Opening Statements Begin in Highway Shootings Trial
A prosecutor says the trial of the man charged in a string of highway shootings will be about choices.
In opening statements Thursday, Assistant Franklin County Prosecutor Ed Morgan says the gunman made the choice not to shoot at firing range targets, but at occupied cars and homes.
Twenty-nine-year-old Charles McCoy Junior is charged with two-dozen counts, including aggravated murder in the death of a woman killed while riding in a car on Interstate 270.
Morgan detailed the 12 shootings, trying to show how close the shots came to passengers, pointing out that bullets hit cars’ hoods and shattered driver-side windows.
One of the shots killed a 62-year-old Gail Knisley of Washington Court House.
McCoy has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to all charges.
