A 24-year-old man has been sentenced to six years in prison after being convicted of attempted murder in the stabbing a central Ohio college class president while he slept in his fraternity house.
Pope accepts resignation of Columbus bishop
The pope has accepted the resignation today of Bishop James Griffin of Columbus.
The 70-year-old Griffin says age and arthritis are forcing him to retire.
The pope has named an auxiliary bishop from Minnesota as his successor in the 23-county Columbus diocese.
At a news conference Thursday, Griffin credited the staff in Columbus for helping the diocese weather the priest sexual abuse scandal in recent years.
The new bishop is 61-year-old Monsignor Frederick Campbell, who has been serving in Saint Paul and Minneapolis since his ordination there in 1980. He was consecrated as a bishop five years ago.
Campbell is an Ohio State University graduate who taught history at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Worthington for two years. He says he’s amazed at how Columbus has grown.
