Ohio State Fair opens today

The 151st Ohio State Fair has opened its 12-day run.

The fair is five days shorter than recent ones, ending on August 15th.

Fair spokeswoman Christina Minier says the decision to trim days was made to keep overhead costs down and reduce the time the fair competed for visitors with other events like concerts.

A free concert is scheduled this evening at the Celeste Center with The Turtles featuring Flo and Eddie, The Grass Roots and The New Rascals.

A highlight of agricultural events today will be the selection of the grand reserve and grand champion Junior Fair market lambs.

This year’s butter cow sculpture honors explorers Lewis and Clark. A team of four artists spent 292 hours fashioning the figures out of two-thousand pounds of butter.
