Gay activists form Pink Pistols group in central Ohio
Gays and guns go together says Kim Rife. Rife’s a member of the Ohio chapter of Pink Pistols, a national group dedicated to arming the gay community for its own protection.
Pink Pistols was created three years ago in Boston as more of a social club for shooting enthusiasts. But as word of the group and membership spread nationally, it became more self-defense oriented. There are now 38 chapters in the U-S and at least 5,000 members.
Rife, 37, says she has twice fended off attempted assaults outside gay clubs in Columbus. She says she has seen how quickly things can escalate in gay bashings.
So Rife and a few acquantances started attending monthly target-practice sessions at a gun range in Powell — which is just north of Columbus. Rife says the group now has about 35 members. Click the “listen” icon to hear an interview with Kim Rife.
