To become governor of Ohio, a candidate must be a qualified elector in the state. This means that any candidate for governor must be at least 18 years old at the time of his/her election, a resident of Ohio for at least 30 days before the election, and a U.S. citizen. Convicted felons and those deemed by the courts as incompetent to vote are not able to hold the governorship. Read more

A pardon erases the sentence, as though it never happened. Commutation of sentence results in a reduction of the sentence to a lesser time period.

The governor heads the executive branch in each state and may have considerable control over government budgeting, the power of appointment of many officials (including many judges), and a considerable role in legislation. The governor may also have additional roles, such as that of commander-in-chief of the state’s National Guard (when not federalized), and in many states and territories the governor has partial or absolute power to commute or pardon a criminal sentence
