We’re Back! And so Is Light Rail
After a week where we looked back at 2008, Columbus On The Record returns to discuss the first hot topics of 2009. Â Amazingly one of the hottest topics is an old topic – light rail. Â Mayor Michael Coleman wants the federal government to give Central Ohio $200 million to start building a light rail line from downtown north to Worthington, near the Delaware County line. Sound familiar? Â Â This is basically the same plan the area considered about five years ago before scrapping it. In the interim the mayor has proposed and then shelved the $103 million dollar downtown streetcar plan.
Does Columbus need a light rail line? Can we afford it right now? Will it really produce the great economic return supporters say it will? And should the city build be pushing for a light rail line just because federal taxpayers and not city taxpayers will foot the bill?
