We’re Back! And so Is Light Rail

After a week where we looked back at 2008, Columbus On The Record returns to discuss the first hot topics of 2009.  Amazingly one of the hottest topics is an old topic – light rail.   Mayor Michael Coleman wants the federal government to give Central Ohio $200 million to start building a light rail line from downtown north to Worthington, near the Delaware County line. Sound familiar?    This is basically the same plan the area considered about five years ago before scrapping it. In the interim the mayor has proposed and then shelved the $103 million dollar downtown streetcar plan.

Does Columbus need a light rail line? Can we afford it right now? Will it really produce the great economic return supporters say it will? And should the city build be pushing for a light rail line just because federal taxpayers and not city taxpayers will foot the bill?
