New Chief of Police for Columbus, New Challenge for Broadcasters
After nearly 2 decades, Columbus has a new police chief. He is long-time police commander Walter Distelzweig. Here’s a link to Mandie Trimble’s story
The 57-year old Distelzweig is a 34-year veteran of the Columbus Division of Police. He most recently served as deputy chief.
Distelzweig succeeds James Jackson who is retiring this month. Jackson served as chief for nearly 19 years, but the city’s charter now says a police chief can serve no longer than 10 years.
So after 20 years of covering a chief with a very easy name to spell and pronounce, writers, editors and broadcasters have to get used to Mr. Distelzweig. It could take a couple weeks.
