The Ohio State University Marching Band Plays On
Jennifer Hambrick’s recent post about her marching band days stirred up some great memories. Early morning practices, steaming hot uniforms early in the season, freezing cold instruments late in the season, (pity the brass!). I’m sure you could add to the list.
I revisit the marching band thread because this Saturday, for the final Summer with the Pops program on WOSU-FM, you’ll hear some of the newest recording by TBDBITL the Best Damn Band in the Land, formally known as the Ohio State University Marching Band.
Is there anyone who does not thrill to the sound of that drum cadence as they prepare to launch themselves from the ramp onto the Ohio Stadium grass before 105,000 rabid fans?
Oh, and don’t forget Script Ohio, which is a marvel of timing and precision. They are the benchmark by which all other bands must be measured. The competition is fierce, the practices are grueling, and to a member, the musicians would tell you the rewards are worth it.
There is more to the OSU Marching Band than meets the eye on football Saturdays. You can hear that in their recordings as they tackle not only arrangements of pop classics and all of the traditional Buckeye favorites, but Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, and Carl Orff as well. You can even have your own TBDBITL ringtone!
I hope you will tune in Saturday to prepare yourself for Fall with the Ohio State University Marching Band. Here’s a little something to wet your whistle!
