This Saturday evening at 7pm on Classical 101, our hour long program Fretworks has music for the classical guitar. This week we’ll hear a guitar trio, a duo, solo pieces, and a concerto for good measure.
This week on Fretworks, the standard six-string Spanish classical guitar is featured on all of our musical selections with some solo pieces as well as various ensemble combinations.
On Saturday evening at 7 on classical 101, the next Fretworks broadcast will feature Paul Galbraith and his 8-string guitar for music of Johann Sebastian Bach.
Conductor and arranger Peter Breiner has made an intriguing setting for guitar and orchestra of music from George Bizet’s opera Carmen. Bizet’s 1875 opera is so full of good tunes, Breiner made his arrangement into four movements lasting about 50 minutes.
This week on Fretworks, we have one of the great early 19th century guitar concertos, Mauro Giuliani’s Guitar Concerto in A, Op. 30. This work from around 1812 is in Late Classical/Early Romantic style and is a joy to hear.
The great Spanish flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia has died. According to CNN, he apparently died of a heart attack while on vacation with his family. He was 66 years old.

Our next Fretworks broadcast Saturday evening at 7 will feature Paul Galbraith, who plays an 8-string guitar of his own design. It’s held like a cello with a metal endpin coming out of the bottom of the guitar and rests on a specially-designed resonating box that adds to the full, rich sound he produces on this unusual instrument. Galbraith will be heard in Bach’s Prelude, Fugue and Allegro, BWV 998.
In the days before Guitar Hero, guitarist and Columbus native Jordan Dodson wanted to be a rock star. Now with acoustic guitar in hand, he’s well on his way to becoming a guitar hero of the classical music world.
