Sweet Singing at the Stake: Renata Tebaldi as Joan of Arc
Giovanna d’Arco (Joan of Arc)Â might not be the first heroineÂ to spring to mindÂ from among the dramatis personÃ¦ of Giuseppi Verdi’s operas. ButÂ it was a role to contend with. In recent decades, the opera has received only a relative smattering of performances worldwide, but the list of Joans of Arc in those performances is a Who’s Who of sopranodom: Susan Dunn, Teresa Stratas, JuneÂ Anderson,Â MontserratÂ CaballÃ© and Renata Tebaldi, to name a few.
