Spirituals Grace The American Sound Saturday on Classical 101
Born of the indignities and spiritual anguish of slavery, African-American spirituals comprise one of America’s richest musical traditions. Together these songs run the gamut from pleas for freedom to praise for God’s mercy and visions of a better life in heaven. And each stands as a witness to the human spirit, which even the body is held captive, always breathes free.
Saturday evening at 6 pm The American Sound features stirring performances of traditional African-American spirituals by legendary soprano Leontyne Price and in the Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble Chanticleer’s signature arrangements by Joseph Jennings. Also hear some unsung spirituals in Morton Gould’s Spirituals for Strings and William Dawson’s Negro Folk Symphony.
It’s uplifting spirituals Saturday at 6pm on The American Sound on Classical 101!
