Cellist Nathaniel Chaitkin is a member of the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra cello section.  Like most musicians, there is much more to his career than what you see on stage.  He currently teaches cello and chamber music at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

However, you don’t have to be a music student in Cincinnati or attend a ProMusica concert to stay in very close contact with Nathaniel.  All you have to do is go to  Rather than having the audience go to the concert hall, Chaitkin brings the concert to the audience.  Here’s how he describes it:

“It’s the excitement of great music performed live, in a relaxed, casual setting.  I play pieces by Bach and other classical composers on my cello, and we listen to recordings by pop and jazz artists like the Beastie Boys and Miles Davis on the boombox.  All great musicians use the same tools in their work, and hearing these different styles side by side helps us hear connections between what we already love and what’s new to us.”

Chaitkin invites audience members to bring their iPod or iPhone along, so that if something he plays reminds you of a favorite tune, you can plug into the boombox and share it with everyone.

Here’s an overview of what is all about.
