Mountain Songs by Robert Beaser on Next Fretworks

For this Thanksgiving  Holiday weekend, we have the Mountain Songs by Robert Beaser on the next Fretworks broadcast Saturday evening at 7 on Classical 101.  This wonderful collection of 8 pieces for flute and guitar from 1984  is a setting of traditional Appalachian melodies that was written for flutist Paula Robison and guitarist Eliot Fisk.  We’ll hear them in their 1986 recording that was nominated for a Grammy Award.

The Paraguayan guitarist Berta Rojas is considered one of the top female performers of the instrument in the world today, and we’ll hear a selection from her most recent CD, Salsa Roja, with music from Fiesta Americana, a suite by Vincent Lindsey-Clark.  Guitarist Stewart Weber plays several selections from his new recording, including Humoreske by Dvorak and America the Beautiful by Samuel Ward.

Not forgetting the European tradition and music for the mandolin, we’ll hear a concerto by Vivaldi for two mandolins and orchestra with Orlando Ugi and Dorina Frati the soloists with the group I Solisti Veneti.

Join me Saturday evening at 7 on Classical 101.  Here’s Berta Rojas performing a great piece of music by Agustin Barrios, Paraguay’s outstanding guitarist-composer.
