Donald McGinnis the much-loved Professor of Music Emeritus at Ohio State University, celebrates his 96th birthday this month.

Dr. McGinnis is a legend around here. You can’t find a School of Music alumnus who doesn’t speak of him with affection and admiration. Me too! Though I was not his student, I interviewed him last year, and spent a lovely afternoon at his home. I could have spent days interviewing the professor.

Dr. McGinnis conducted The Ohio State University Concert Band at Carnegie Hall on March 23, 1972. This when he wasn’t busy on campus or conducting at presidential inaugurations. A recording of that Carnegie concert has just arrived at Classical 101. I’m delighted to give it a radio debut tomorrow, on Classical 101 By Request at 1 pm.

Tune in and celebrate with us both the recording of this splendid Carnegie Hall concert, and the birthday of its beloved maestro.

Classical 101 By Request, Fridays at 1 pm. Let me know what you want to hear. Go to request page or call 292-9678!

Please don’t be shy!

I was in the Concert Band during Dr. McGinnis’ final year before he retired. He was  a very strict conductor but knew how to draw the best out of the musicians in the Band. We reconnected several years later at a meeting of the Central Ohio Flute Association. He is a very dear man indeed and not shy with his opinions. Happy Birthday, Dr. McGinnis!  John Chovan, Class of 1980, School of Music, OSU.
