For those who are always on the lookout for first-rate Italian food, especially those from the East side, look no further than Pickerington just off Route 256.

Lomonico’s, a family-owned, chef-driven restaurant offers a lot of surprises. Lomonico’s, open for four months, has knowledgeable owners, a trained chef, and friendly/polished service (ask for Stephanie or Ron), The large 140 seat dining room, with plain floors, wooden tables and high ceilings, seems to always be jammed with a youngish, upscale crowd. The wine list is well-selected and with low mark-ups. Wines from the retail shop are available at the table for an $8 corkage. Items from the diverse but Italian-based menu are all well-prepared in ample portions.

We started with a bottle of 2011 Bayonette (Dave Phinney of Orin Swift and The Prisoner fame), $14.99 retail plus an $8 corkage made it a real bargain at $22. They start with a house made foccacia with herb and garlic oil for dipping. We shared the very good but small carpaccio (prime filet, garlic aioili, arugula, crostini)($11); the excellent charred Caesar (grilled romaine, parmesan, Caesar dressing) ($6); Sicilian rice balls (arancini), with Italian sausage, peas, excellent marinara ($7); pappardelle Bolognese, beef & pork, tomato cream ($13); pasta carbonara, parmesan cream, bacon, peas, poached egg ($13); braised short rib, whipped potatoes, glazed carrots, gremolata ($20); bacon wrapped pork tenderloin, warm spinach salad, mustard jus ($16); caramel buddino (pudding), sea salt, butterscotch, peanuts, cream ($6).

The full menu includes 8 starters ($6 to $12 for a lobster roll); 5 salads, all $6, a bargain; 3 pastas ($13); pizzas ($12 and up); 9 entrees, from $10 for the pot pie to $23 for the flatiron steak; and 5 desserts, all $6.

Lomonico’s also does catering. And Chef/Owner Craig Lomonico will conduct cooking classes for small parties in a separate demonstration kitchen through prior arrangement.

Lomonico’s is a wonderful surprise and a hidden treasure in Pickerington, with impressive food at value prices, a nice selection of wines at bargain price, and excellent service.
