World War II Pacific Tour

A group of Ohio State University students traveled the pacific island battlefields of World War II with the veterans who fought there. As a part of the study abroad course through the Department of History, students were paired with a veteran to preserve memorials of the war in the Pacific Theatre.

Students were tasked with documenting the stories of a veteran as they toured the islands of Guam, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima. Following the trip, the students had to write about the veteran’s stories in a meaningful way.

The veterans were able to make the trip, through the Greatest Generation Foundation based in Denver, Colorado which provides the tours programs to return to the battlefield.

The study abroad courses is part of a current initiative by the History department to allow students to learn how the United States fits into the world.

As a part of the trip, students connected with the veterans to better understand the war. As a result they gained new insight into the war from a personal perspective and learned valuable life lessons.

Ohio State and Metro High School Students Run OSU Student Farm

Ohio State undergraduates and graduates work alongside and mentor Metro High School students while learning about sustainable agriculture and vegetable production. At the Waterman Agricultural and Natural Resources Laboratory, students learn about organic farming, urban farming and integrated crop management.

The high school students have also entrepreneurial skills by launching a farmers market at Metro High School.
