Evil Dead: The Musical offers its audience squirts of fake blood that they might not have expected, but the musical’s audience has offered its producers something they didn’t expect: first-time theater goers.

“I thought that we were really focusing on a group of very sort of 20- to 30-somethings, but we rolled it out and I found lots of sort of closet Evil Dead supporters,” Steven Anderson, the Contemporary American Theatre Company, or CATCO’s creative director of the new musical, Evil Dead told WOSU’s theatre critic, Joy Reilly.

Evil Dead is about five college students who go to an abandoned cabin in the woods and unleash demons, Anderson said. The demons then pick off the students one by one. The hero, Ash Williams, must then save humanity from the demons.

At one point in the musical, a character’s hand is demon-possessed. Anderson said blood squirts everywhere when the character saws off his hand.

For moments like these, Anderson said there is a splash zone where “safe blood” hits the audience. The blood is made of chocolate.

“It’s an experience,” Anderson said.

Although Anderson said the show had been selling out in many other markets, he did say the show was not suitable for all ages.

“There is a certain amount of words that your mother would not allow you to say,” Anderson said. “So the strong language and, of course, the completely funny blood aspects of it would not make me say, ‘Oh, this is the perfect opportunity for my 10 year old.”

Evil Dead: The Musical runs from June 1 through 19 at the Riffe Center in Columbus, Ohio.

I Am My Own Wife, by Doug Wright, opens at CATCO February 2, 2011.

I Am My Own Wife is a one person show based on the life of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf – a Berlin born boy who self-identified as female at an early age. It won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Tony Award for Best Play.

Despite living under the Nazi regime – the most repressive era in history – Charlotte defied rigid gender norms by dressing and acting as a woman.

The play consists of 35 characters who surround Charlotte’s story. All 35 characters, Charlotte included, are played by The Ohio State University (OSU) MFA alum Christopher Marlowe Roche.

WOSU’s theater critic Joy Reilly talks to Roche about Charlotte von Mahlsdorf.

I Am My Own Wife is more than a story about a remarkable character – it is a tale about identity and what we tell ourselves (lies, truth or in between) to get by in this world.

What makes this story so intriguing is that Charlotte von Mahlsdorf had a passion for collecting gramophone records, antique clocks and furniture from late 19th-century Germany. It is the story of inventions – clocks and records and, yes, identity.

More on Charlotte von Mahlsdorf’s collecting with Roch:

I Am My Own Wife runs February 2 through the 20th at the Riffe Center Studio Two Theatre.

WOSU's Marilyn Smith goes behind the scenes at CATCO, The Contemporary American Theater Company, to talk with set designers, lighting designer, costume designers and other people who make the show go on.

The American Contemporary Theater Company – CATCO – opens its new season in October with “Escanaba in Love,” a play by actor Jeff Daniels.

There is, of course, a cast of terrific actors bringing the production to life on The Capitol One Theater stage and a cast of characters of a sort behind the scenes, designing sets, lighting and costumes…without whose expertise the show would not go on.

We recently attended a “Dress Parade,” a kind of costume review, and met with some of these talented people to talk about their work.

We talked with Cheryl Ruschau a member of the CATCO Staff and Stage Manager for “Escanaba in Love”; David Atkinson, a freelance artist who is a Lighting Designer for “Escanaba in Love”; Keya Myers-Alkire of the CATCO Staff, Master Electrician/Sound Engineer and Sound Designer for “Escanaba in Love”; Tatjana Longerot a member of the CATCO Staff and the Costume Shop Manager; Stephanie Gerckens a freelance artist and Set Designer for “Escanaba in Love”; Edie Wadkins a freelance artist and the Scenic Artist for “Escanaba in Love”.

CATCO’s “Escanaba in Love” opens October 15 in the Capitol One Theater in the Riffe Center downtown.
