Ohio State Marching Band Director Jon Waters was terminated on Thursday after a university investigation uncovered a sexualized culture within the marching band. Waters’ firing comes after a two-month investigation prompted by complaints made by a parent of a band member. The investigation uncovered sexually-explicit activities which appear to have gone for years. This hour we’ll be taking your calls for reaction to the punishment.

At OSU, sexually-explicit activities are not limited to just the marching band……..

Most of the decisions by OSU administration are made by pressure from external stakeholders – always concern about losing donors and usually some regulatory or accreditation agency. The decision to fire Smith, as with many decisions where very large organizations assume a zero tolerance stewardship role, they are throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Executive summaries and spreadsheets do not provide a comprehensive enough picture of the problem or the plethora of potential solutions, and most managers are not familiar enough with the activities they are overhauling. Many times these moves plays for promotion.

For a show that calls itself “All Sides,” this episode was a terribly one-sided discussion. The conversation consisted of two like-minded panelists who had little insight to this particular event. Lots of leading questions and generalities filled up the hour. If you’re looking for insight you haven’t considered, save your time and skip this show.
