What is that connection between humans and animals – especially dogs? How quickly do such bonds form, and why is it stronger for some people than others?

The New York Times recently reported that pets really do come between people, that having a pet around can help sell an apartment, of all things. The report also mentioned that the use of pets – especially dogs – as a form of therapy is increasing all the time.
